CANGO requires a strong board (International Council) to achieve a high level of quality and long term effectiveness. A strong, viable and participatory association requires a strong and efficient governance structure and a strong sense of participativeness and ownership by its members and stakeholders in its operations and activities.
In line with CANGO's democratic governance processes enshrined in the byelaws of the Commonwealth Association of Non-Governmental Organisations (CANGO), we call on ALL members of non-governmental organisations worldwide, especially those in the 54 member nations of the Commonwealth to nominate themselves or others for membership of the "The International Council", the highest policy making body of the Association (CANGO).
"The International Council the supreme Governing body of the Association shall be vested with the supreme and sole authority of making decisions affecting the goals, policy, plans and programmes of the Association. The International Council of CANGO has the final word as to whether any member is complying with the letter and spirit of the Associations’ goals or not. The Council has the basic responsibility for funding all programmes and support services of and for the Association. " Article V Section 1 CANGO Byelaws
CANGO is building a representative governing board made up of men and women with the capacity to give or to provide leadership, access to funders and donors, skills and influence as it relates to the Association's strategic focus and direction, willing to contribute personally to the financial security of the Association, readiness to be involved in fund raising according to one's means, talents and contacts; support, review, evaluate and assess the performance of the Executive Committee; determine, monitor and strengthen the Association's programs and services; contribute to the legal and ethical integrity of the Association, and enhance the Association's public standing
Guidelines for Nomination
Individuals nominated for membership into the International Council may be business executives and board members of business corporations, non-profit organisations, members of the diplomatic corps, distinguished academicians, philanthropists etc.
International Council (IC) Nominees shall be chosen on merit. background. skills, with reasonable turnover, represent large or specific constituencies, has expertise and influence, are willing to make personal contributions and participate in fundraising and shall contribute to the protection of fundamental values of world peace, democracy and human rights
IC Nominees shall be willing to abide by the byelaws of CANGO and shall accept the responsibility of Article V Section 1 to partake in funding all programmes and support services of and for the Association.
Nominees shall register with the Association as members and willing to contribute or mobilise reasonable contribution of funds annually and contribute reasonable working hours, and to attend at least one meeting, especially the Annual General Meeting of the International Council
The final list of nominees shall be presented by the Nominating Committee to the Annual General meeting of CANGO for Election by members into the International Council.
To nominate an individual or yourself for membership of the International Council of CANGO, kindly send in information details about yourself and your nominee including name of nominee, contact details including full address, phone, fax, and email, current status, organisational position and a reasons/citations for your nomination of at least 200 words but not more than one page.

Board development is crucial in the next phase of CANGO's development. Focus on recruitment into the International Council focuses on strategic diversity capable of taking this young but international organisation to higher level of performance and impact in the global arena.
